You need to sign into your Hotmail account in Mac Mail, but you get frustrated as this is your first time connecting to your Hotmail account in via an email program. No worry, this article covers everything you need to know to get started.

What are IMAP and POP3?

Your interactions with an email server are made possible through internet protocols, such as IMAP and POP3. IMAP allows you to read and manage your email messages in an email server, and your device will not download all your email messages unless on demand.

Therefore, your email messages can be accessed from different devices. POP3, on the other hand, downloads all your email messages onto your device. Once downloaded, the email messages are discarded from your email server and cannot be accessed through other devices anymore.

What is the difference between MSN Hotmail, Windows Live and Outlook?

Microsoft has evolved over time, and all the changes may be confusing. The first version of email service offered by Microsoft was MSN Hotmail. Later, it changed into Windows Live Hotmail. Today, all emails are accessed through Outlook.com. Note that, as names changed, you can still sign in to your Hotmail account through Outlook.
